“Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration” by Nicole Fleetwood
With her book, Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration, Nicole R. Fleetwood offers a powerful document of the inner lives and creative visions of people rendered invisible by America’s prison system. Based on interviews with currently and formerly incarcerated artists, prison visits, and the author’s own family experiences with the penal system, Marking Time shows how art can provide the imprisoned with a political voice and offer a new vision of freedom for the 21st century. On January 13, 2021, Fleetwood, who is Professor of American Studies and Art History at Rutgers University, discussed the book and the related exhibition she curated for MoMA PS1 in New York. — Youtube
